Sources for decorative paper to use in our bindings have long been a fount of interest and exploration among bookbinders. Paste paper dates back to at least the early 17th century in Germany, where binders would combine wheat paste and paint, apply it to a sheet of paper, and then use tools, items, or their hands to drag designs that displayed an almost magical depth. I have been working on this style of paper for the last few months, and the blue and white design on this book is part of a larger sheet. It is waxed with local beeswax and burnished by hand for durability and even a little bit of water resistance. I wonder if it would repel spilling fountain pen, but you can try that yourself when you enjoy your favorite nibs on the thick white paper in this book.
Details: Approx 5 1/4 X 4 inches; Bradel/German style case binding; housemade paste paper and bookcloth over boards; 144 blank pages of 105gsm white paper from Neenah’s Astrobrights; confetti card endpapers; blue ribbon bookmark; unique edition of one book.
