This beefy little book is ready for your adventures -- A LOT of them, with its 320 pages of blank white paper! It is bound with vintage green thread, waxed with locally sourced beeswax and is topped off with a vintage button closure. When opened, you can see the full map from which I made the covers.

Size: 4 1/3 X 2 7/8 inches

Cover material(s): Decorative paper featuring vintage maps of North America; hand-marbled (suminagashi) endpapers

I bound this book with "Precision Deckle" edges. That is, I fold and tear each page, one at a time and with a custom-designed tool, to achieve the both the deckle look and a precision that makes the book as useful and accurately measured as one in which the signatures are cut.

While we contemporary bookbinders use myriad materials and details on our Coptic bindings, the binding itself is nothing new. Coptic bound books are deceptively intricate constructions that have their origin in the 2nd century CE, when the Copts of North Africa literally invented the codex -- what we would recognize as a book. The Copts used this binding method for nearly a millennium, and it is still one of the best ways to bind a book that will open flatly and which also allows for creative expression on the part of the binder.
